With more than 100 km of extensive beaches in the municipalities of Armería, Tecomán and Manzanillo this zone is of great importance for tourism.

The port of Manzanillo is one of México's principal Pacific ports due to the great volumes of cargo - both import and export - handled on its docks. Manzanillo has also become one of the country's most important tourist resorts, and its excellent hotels and restaurants continue to meet the demands of both national and international tourists.

Founded on May 24, 1967, this is the youngest municipality in the state. Regional candies such as coconut and pineapple paste sweets, coconut confections with honey, pecans and raisins, guava paste, tamarind candies, caramel candies soaked in liqueur and sweet-dried bananas are all sold here. Standing out amidst the urban landscape are row after row of coconut palm trees outlined by the blue ocean and bright Colima sun.

CUYUTLÁN BEACH

Estimated time: From Manzanillo, 20 minutes

Playa de Cuyutlán

Founded on May 24, 1967, it is the youngest Municipality of the State. In Armería you can get regional sweets, such as coconut and pineapple pastes, cocadas with honey, nuts or raisins; guava rolls, tamarind, “little drunks”, dehydrated bananas, among other sweets and delicacies. In the urban landscape, you can admire a horizone of palm trees with a background of blue sea waters and the Coliman sun shinning.

 

EL TORTUGARIO ECOLOGICAL CENTER

On the nearby beaches of Cuyutlán in Armería, you will find El Tortugario Ecological Center, where you can experience the magic of the marine life through fantastic interactive experiences that help to preserve endangered species. In El Tortugario, visitors will be able to release, from their own hands, baby turtles ready to return to the sea (depending on the climatological conditions).

This camp also possesses a “cocodrilario”, and an “iguanario”(crocodile and iguana Ecological Centers), a natural sidewalk to see the birds and a wharf that allows you to embark a boat and admire El Paraíso lagoon.

 

THE SALT MUSEUM

Museo de la Sal

This singular museum was created because the economic activity of greatest importance in this locality is the extraction of salt. It is set up in one of the “salineras” or salt mine storages. Here, the visitor will be able to observe a reproduction of the many famous Cuyutlán salt mines. The museum also provides a sketch with a description of the culture of the workers of the salt, and their sphere and life conditions.

 

EL PARAÍSO ESTUARY

The mangrove plantations of the Paraíso estuary are a "must-see" for those visiting Cuyutlán. It is an impressive ecosystem of wild flora and fauna, providing the ideal habitat for white herons and pink flamingoes on small strangely-shaped barren islands. To see these birds take off in flocks in free and rhythmic flight is truly a magnificent sight.

EL PARAÍSO BEACH

Estimated time: From Cuyutlan, 10 minutes

 

Narrow beach located to the north of the Armería river mouth. This beach counts with lifeguard and sunshade renting services. In May and June, this beach is visited by a great variety of tourists who like to practice aquatic sports, such as surfing, windsurfing and the banana rides.

 

 

 

 

El Limonero

The tree of life is the symbol of our warm welcome to visitors touring this municipality, known around the world foru its vast production of lemond. This monumental work is the creation of the famous sculptor, Sebastián. At a height of 30 meters and a weighing 110 tons, it evokes the spirit of our producers.

Cocos

Since the Colonial time, Tecomán Valley was known as an agricultural center. Its lands have given men: cocoa, cotton, coconut, lemons, mangoes, papaya, avocado and melon. Nowadays, one of the main produced fruits is lemon Colima, appreciated by its juiciness. Tecomán is the third Municipality in order of importance in the State, after the Capital and Manzanillo Municipality. Tecomán preserves its folkloric traditions like, the celebration of La Candelaria Virgen on February 2. It is also one of the main agricultural zones to the national level in production of lemon, coconut, banana, watermelon, melon, mango and papaya.

TECOMAN "THE CAPITAL WORLD OF THE MEXICAN LEMON"

Limones de Tecomán Colima

One of the typical fruits of Colima is Lemon, citric brought from Europe, but it is registered botanically as Mexican Lemon. With few more then 19,000 hectares, Colima State occupies the first place in its production. It has kept this relevance since the end of the XIXth century when the Comala Municipality and Tecomán already exported it monthly to San Francisco, California. In the fifties the citricultors of Tecomán Valley signed a contract with Golden Citrus Juices Inc of Florida, in order that the lemon juice and essential oil were sold to them, multiplying for it the packing and industrialization plants. They make good use of this fruit, from leaf oil is obtained, from the skin jam is made and pectins are obtained and certainly the juice, of which diverse uses are given.

 

BOCA DE PASCUALES BEACH

It is located opposite to opened sea, its blue waters are deep, propitious for the surfing practice; it is an extensive beach where the Armería river mouth can be seen.

This beach is the typical and traditional place for those who visit Tecomán region, and want to delight his palate since the seafood that here is prepared is of excellent quality and freshness, as the ceviche style Colima or the traditional seafood soupwith fish, shrimps, crab and octopus seasoned with spices.

Shrimps are the speciality and they are offered to the visitor with garlic, butter, with breaded or hot spicy . Along the beach there can be found all kinds of marine crafts, such as earrings and shell and/or conch necklaces, and marine animals carved in wood. For being an opened sea beach, the swell is strong, for what it is advisable to observe the flags that are placed along the beaches for the visitor's safety.

 

EL REAL BEACH

Playa el Real

It is located near Tecomán, opposite to opened sea, deep waters and moderate swell, its light gray color sand spreads on a wide band of moderate slope. This beach's swell is ideal for surfing because its waters make tube form waves.

 

TECUANILLO BEACH

Estimated time: From Tecoman, 12 minutes

It is a proper place for the rest and to enjoy the delights that the sea has to offer. Beaches in this zone are of thin dark gray color sand and moderate slop. In the Tecuanillo's river mouth, the swamps vegetation abound and diverse marine birds can be observed.

Manzanillo Capital Mundial del Pez Vela

Port of great renown in the country. It was a point of departure of numerous maritime expeditions through the Pacific Ocean and the Nao of China ship used to arrive to this port from The Philippines with its valuable load of oriental products. Manzanillo was the third port that the Spaniards created in the Pacific Ocean. It is known as the World Capital of the Sailfish, because in 1957, 336 species were captured in its waters. Since then, it is a point of interest for all of the sports fishing lovers due to the big quantity of species, like sailfish and the marlyn, being for it, headquarter of the International Tournament Dorsey since 1954.

Museo Universitario de Arqueología

This museum opened its doors in 1996, projected to spread among the Manzanillo port youth and its visitors the cultural past and to contribute to the diffusion of the Western Cultures, which left a number of important vestiges of their presence. The museum is a building of modern lines, constructed thinking fundamentally on the high sesimicity conditions of the area and on the nearness to the coast. It lets you learn, through figurines and jars, about the Comala, Capacha, Los Ortices, Periquillos, Colima and Armería cultures.

The museum distribution consists of 5 exhibition rooms, where it is shown more than 1,800 pieces of a collection of 18,000. Many of the pieces were donated to the University of Colima by collectors of Manzanillo and of the region. There, the reproduction of two tombs that correspond to the Comala phase, from 300 to 500 yeas A.D., stand out. The last exhibition room is utilized for temporary exhibitions.

 

SEASHELL AND CONCH MUSEUM

This shop - museum is ideal for those who are looking for handcrafted typical works of the coast. Here, you can find different objects mainly made of shells, conch and corals. Besides admiring the skills and the ingenuity of the Coliman craftsman, you can buy the objects you are interested in.

MANZANILLO AND SANTIAGO BAYS

These two bays are devided by the Santiago Peninsula. Due to their physical similarities, they are known as twins. In the peninsula, one of the most attractive tourist complexes of the country is located. Manzanillo bay consists of the following beaches: Ventanas, Las Coloradas, El Viejo, San Pedrito, Las Brisas, Playa Azul, Salahua, Las Hadas and La Escondida, the fiscal wharf, and the interior port. The Santiago bay includes these beaches: La Audiencia, Santiago, Olas Altas, Miramar and La Boquita.


LAS BRISAS BEACH

Extensive beach opposite to the Manzanillo Bay with sand of average texture, light brown color, with a gradual slope and moderate swell; its waters show a coloration that goes from blue to green. It is ideal to swim, to sunbathe and to contemplate the sunset. It is surrounded by palm tree vegetation. This place is one of the most important residential zones and hotels in Manzanillo.

LA AUDIENCIA BEACH

Located in the Santiago Peninsula, in front of the bay of the same name, in a small cove surrounded by palms trees. This beach of gray golden sand, of average texture, gradual slope and moderate swell, is a calm and quiet place ideal to swim or to rest. For being located on the coast of the Mexican Pacífic, it has an nice tropical climate that allows you to enjoy sunny days most of the year. The legend tells that it was here where Hernán Cortés, conqueror of the New Spain (México), summoned all his captains to plan the conquest of the Californias. Becuase La Audiencia is a vey calm beach, is consired a perfect place to practice sports, such as volleyball, ski, nagevation, snorkeling and diving. There, you will be able to rent equipment for the practice of these sports.

OLAS ALTAS BEACH

This beach is located in Santiago Bay. Its soft sand makes it a perfect beach to sunbathe, to play volleyball and to enjoy the tropical weather and landscape that the Mexican Pacífic coasts offer to us. It is called Olas Altas or "High Waves" because during spring - summer majestic waves raise where you can practice, without any danger, your favorite aquatic sports. This area has been characterized for offering interesting options of condominiums, villas and bungalows.

MIRAMAR BEACH

Miramar beach is one of the most visited beaches by the tourist in general because it offers good accomodation and meal services. Because of its popularity and demand, the construction of a tourist seafront is projected, which will offer to the tourist a more pleasant stay due to the amont of services that are being projected. It is a very long and broad beach with fine light brown sand. Its swell is soft and the slope is moderate, propitious conditions to bathe and to swim, to suntan or to relaxe. It offers aquatic renting equipment for diving, fishing, ski, jet-ski, windsurfing, parachute, banana, among others. Also handcrafts can be bought in several places set up on the beach shore and in two permanent markts located close to Miramar beach.You will find handcrafts from the locality and neighboring places.

LA BOQUITA BEACH

La Boquita is a beautiful beach located at the end of Santiago Bay, in Manzanillo. It is one of the most visited beaches for its soft swell and moderate slope, which make it propitious to swim and practice aquatic sports like, ski, jet-ski, windsurfing, swimming, diving and snorkeling. We recommend you to be coutious when you practice aquatic sports in this area, because in the nearby part of the hill there are crags covered by water; the rest of the beach does not present any danger. It has an extension of approximately 1 km, of fine dark golden color sand, where it is possible to play volleyball or to rest under the splendid sun that can be enjoyed only in Colima coasts.

Some hotels and services dedicated to the sport activities offer an endless number of options. One of them is kayac tours: Groups leave from the hotels towards the pacific lagoons where the marsh is navegated, admiring throughout the tour different kinds of birds like pelicans or seagulls.

Another fun activity is the four wheel motorcycle tour, which you can use to ride dirt roads surrounded by vegetation, besides feeling the wind speed striking your face and increasing your body adrenaline.

Some places offer horse-back rinding tour services throught the mountain, crossing rivers and enjoying the nature among different kinds of plants and animal.

Some hotels organize tours in small crafts, waking the waters' bays to get to some places where it is possible to snorkel or to dive, in the depths. Tourist will find themselves surrounded by marine fauna of beautiful colors and forms, the main species that can be seen are globefish, hedgehog and manta rays.

DEEP-SEA FISHING

Pesca Deportiva en Manzanillo

One of the most important attractions for the tourism that comes to Manzanillo is fishing. It enjoys international reputation because of the simplicity it is practiced, here in Manzanillo. Due to the fact that in these waters, has been captured the biggest number of sailfish worldwide, the port has received the title of The World Capital of the Sailfish.

Deep-sea fishing is a modality that needs crafts of regular size that are propitious to navegate distances of 16 km of the coast, in opened sea, where the water depth allows you to catch big specimen like, sailfish and black, striped and blue marlin.


Manzanillo's adventage over other ports is that here, to catch an specimen, you need to navegate for only 10 ta 15 minutes from the point of departure; but in other tourist destinations you have to navegate from 2 to 3 hours to catch one.


GOLF

Another sport that is practiced in Manzanillo and that has given it reputation worldwide is golf, thanks to its wonderful fields that have turned into headquarters of international tournaments where the most world famous golfers play.

The most spectacular field is that of Isla Navidad, thanks to its design meticulously planned by architect Robert Von Hagge, who has designed 184 other besides this one and participated in the planning of the design of other 200 in the world. The 27 golf fields have turned it into a challenge for many golfers. Besides, there are areas destined for diverse services like La Casa Club and the International School of Golf.

Las Hadas golf field has 18 holes, but it is not less beautiful, decorated with a multitud of palms trees that dance with the wind and observe silently every sportsmen's shot.

In Club Santiago, you can find the third golf field in Manzanillo, with 9 holes and a special characteristic; It is located opposite to the sea, which gives it a different and hot touch.
