CULTURAL COLIMA ROUTE

The visitor will have the opportunity to walk through different cultural buildings which narrate the history of our Capital City and its surroundings. You can make a tour of the museum spaces, historical buildings as well as streets, portals and alleys in approximately 3 hours. You can walk, since everything is located in the Historical Center.

Where to eat? Los Naranjos Restaurant and around gardens are numerous restaurants and fast food places

Brief Colima History

During the Prehispanic era, the region which is now occupied by the State of Colima, used to be the settlement of various ethnic groups which flourished in Western Mexico. The name of Colima comes from “Coliman”, Nahuatl word used to designate the ancient lordship. Colli, means hill, volcano or grandfather and Maitl, means hand, domain, meaning: “Place Conquered by our grandparents” or “Place where the Old God or God of Fire dominates” talking about the volcano.

Jardín Libertad (Libertad Park)

This beautiful Park exhibits beautiful palm trees and multicolor flowers that surround the magnificent kiosk, brought from Belgium in 1891. Original fountains with metal swans decorate the plaza which is framed by typical portals.


Ubicación: frente a Catedral

Regional Museum of History:

Since 1988, it has been the headquarters of the Regional Museum of History, thanks to the donations of two important collections: The Stayenhagen and the Velasco Curiel, besides Colima’s and surrounding Archeological collections. You can appreciate European furniture from the 19th century.

Schedule:Tuesday to Saturday: from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Sunday: From 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Government Palace

Its construction was under the charge of Architect Lucio Uribe. He began in 1877 and finished in 1904. On the façade we can observe a copy of the Dolores bell and an ancient clock which was brought form Germany in 1891; both are located over the main balcony. In its interior, Mexico´s history is found on fresco paintings serving as a tribute to Priest Don Miguel Hidalgo.

How to get there: Starting from Libertad Park, it is located on Reforma Street, beside the Minor Basilica Cathedral.

   

Minor Basilica Cathedral

The neoclassic style façade church got the rank of Cathedral in 1894. It has been consecrated to the Virgin of Guadalupe. During its festivities, in December, the Cathedral receives thousands of faithful, especially women and children, dressed up in the typical Indian dress, who visit the place with intense devotion to adore the Mother of Mexico.

How to get there: Starting from Libertad Park, it is located on Reforma Street, beside the Government Palace.

   

Constitución Walkway:

We’ll walk through quarry cut fountains decorated with stylized swans made of iron. Under the palm tree shade, we will find the local artisans and painters “tlacuilos” working as well as various handicrafts stores.

How to get there:Starting at Libertad Park, we walk North, beside the Hotel Ceballos, on Constitución Street.

Hidalgo Small Square:

Colonial style lanterns, benches, plants and an Equatorial Solar Clock in the middle, art piece of Colima’s Architect Julio Mendoza Chávez, decorate this Small Square dedicated to the memory of the Liberator.

How to get there:Starting from Libertad Park, walk three blocks towards the North on Constitución Street until you get to Vicente Guerrero Street, beside the Alfonso Michel University Gallery.

    

Alfonso Michel University Gallery.

It exhibits a rich heritage formed by pictorial, graphic, sculptural and photographic nature pieces. Within its vast collection we find art pieces from Colima artists from the 19th and 20th centuries such as Mercedes Zamora, Alejandro Rangel Hidalgo, Jorge Chávez Carrillo, among others.

How to get there:Starting from Libertad Park, walk three blocks on Constitución Street towards the North until you get to Vicente Guerrero Street, next to the Hidalgo Small Square. Schedule: Tuesday to Saturday: From 10:00 a.m. -2:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday: From 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
