PREHISPANIC COLIMA ROUTE

If you would like to know the prehispanic past in detail, we recommend you visit some of the archaeological zones, its graves, see the pottery offerings, the pluvial drainage system, the religious center with various monuments, altars and some ball game fields. Through the vestiges of human activities you will learn about Western Mexico’s ancient civilizations from different eras.

Archeologial Zone El Chanal:

With a surface of 50 hectares, is the largest pre-Hispanic settlement of the State of Colima. In this archeological area we find ceremonial centers, altars and some ball game fields. Of special interest, we find the structures of the “Osario”, the “Pyramid” and the “Great Platform”. Lived its splendor between 1.100 and 1,400 b.C.

How to get there: Drive north, taking Venustiano Carranza Street. When you get to the end of the Street you must follow the cobbled path, following the signs.

Location: End of the Street Venustiano Carranza (10 minutes northwest of downtown Colima), then continue on paved road about 6 km

Archeological Zone La Campana:

The archeological zon La Campana is considered the largest pre-Hispanic settlement in western Mexico, it contains vestiges dating back to 1500 b.C, although it reached its peak in the period between 700 and 900. This area now covers 134 hectares, but only a small part of this extension has been explored.It is an archeological zone that used to be the most populated Prehispanic nucleus of Western Mexico. You will find graves, pottery offerings, pluvial drainage system, avenues and a religious administrative center with various monuments.

How to get there: Starting from Libertad Park, take Francisco I. Madero Street, walk 3 blocks west until you get to Corregidora Street. Take that street in a northern direction until you get to San Fernando Avenue (approximately 9 blocks). Turn left, stay on the Avenue and drive to the Northwest zone (approximately 5 blocks), turn right when you get to Mariano Arista Street and continue north until you get to Tecnológico Avenue. Once there, turn left on Tecnológico Avenue and drive about 200 meters (0.1 miles) and you will find the signs which will take you to the Archeological Zone La Campana.

Tampumachay

It has services such as a restaurant and bar, pools, suspension bridge, regional archeological exhibition, small hotel and camping areas. It is an ideal place for those who like limestone regions, and that will see cactus, cacti, organ and more.
