Visiting Tecomán
El Limonero (The Lemon Tree).
The Tree of Life, gives a warm welcome to everybody who visits this municipality which is internationally known for its great lemon production. This monumental work was done by famous sculpture Sebastián. It is 30 meters (98.4 feet) high and it weights 110 tons. It represents our producer’s work and effort.
Since colonial times, the Tecomán valley has been known as an agricultural center. Cacao, cotton, coconut, lemon, mango, papaya, avocado and melon had been harvested in this land. Nowadays, its main fruit crop is the Colima Lemon, valued for its juiciness. Tecomán is the third most important municipality of the State, after the Capital and Manzanillo. Tecomán keeps its folk traditions such as the Candelaria Virgin Festivity on February 2nd. It is also one of the main national agricultural zones talking about lemon, coconut, banana, watermelon, melon, mango and papaya production.
Tecoman: Mexican Lemon’s World Capital.
One of Colima’s characteristic fruit is the Lemon. Although it was brought from Europe, in the botanical registers it is considered as Mexican Lemon. With more than 19,000 hectares, Colima has the first place in its production. This was since the 19th Century when Comala and Tecomán began exporting to San Francisco, California each month. During 1950, the lemon farmers from the Tecoman Valley, signed a contract with Golden Citrus Juices Inc, from Florida to sell lemon juice and essential oil. This forced the building of more packing plants and industries. From this fruit, almost every part is used; from the leaves, oil is extracted, from the skin, jelly is made, and pectins are obtained, and of course, the juice which is used for many different things.
